12/19/11: Making a Great First Impression

Making a Great First Impression at a Model Casting

When attending an agency open call, it is best to look as natural as possible. It’s one of the very few occasions when I will say, “less is more!” Simple is the key word here…simple makeup, simple jewelry and very simple clothing. ReFresh Talent needs to see what you look like; the condition of your skin and the shape of your figure. Here is a basic guideline to help you through an open call.

Let Your Skin Shine:
We want to see what YOU look like, not your artful techniques at covering problem spots, so makeup should be applied with a light hand to appear natural. You would be amazed by the impact a light coat of mascara, hint of blush, dab of concealer and powder (where needed) can make when applied properly. Please avoid foundation, smoky eyes, eyeliner, false lashes and any bright or dark lipstick.
On the other hand, if you are comfortable with a clean fresh face, then, by all means, go bare!

Sleek and Neat:
We want to see the structure of your face, so clean, neat and frizz free hair is best. You can wear it in a bun or ponytail, but remember to not pull it too tightly. If your hair is naturally curly or wavy, don’t try to straighten it but enhance your waves or curls. Bring a hair tie just in case you are asked to pull it back.

Show Your Pearly Whites:
I can’t stress what a difference a bright white smile makes on your overall appearance. Use a whitening toothpaste OR, make a paste from 1 tsp baking soda and a few drops of peroxide, and brush it on like you would using a regular toothpaste.

Go Neutral:
Clean and trim nails with a neutral shade of polish OR nicely buffed nails with no polish is a great and classic look. We don’t want to see your unique personality on your nails so save the stripes, multi colors, cartoon characters and rhinestones for yourself. If you are a nail biter, please refrain from chewing up those digits until after your appointment!

A Blank Canvas:
If the agency has made a specific request or recommendation for what to wear then you can skip this part. If nothing was mentioned, choose clothing that fits you well, shows off your figure and is fairly neutral in style. You’ll also want to wear colors that highlight or accent your skin tone. You are like a blank canvas, and we need to be able to envision how your look can be best suited for our clients. Avoid clothing that is too tight, unflattering colors, patterns or loud slogans and any heavy jewelry or accessories.

A pair of skinny jeans and a basic white tank top works well, because these pieces allow us to see your figure and the basic structure of your arms, chest and legs. Another option for warmer weather is a close fitting t-shirt or tank top and a pair of shorts or skirt that is not too short or tight. Keep your look classy by ensuring your foundations cannot be seen. Nothing ruins an impression like hideous panty lines or visible bra straps!

Say No to Flips or Flats:
Wear a pair of 2½-3” high heels like a simple black pump with a pointed toe. This will give the appearance of length, show us you are comfortable walking in high heels and, most importantly, demonstrate the quality of your walk. Do try to avoid chunky heels or wedges as you tend to walk harder/stomp instead of gliding while wearing them.

Remember that your best accessory is your attitude. This is a job interview, so when you walk through the door we want to know that you are professional, courteous, timely and that you take your job as a model seriously.

Good luck and have fun!
